Diamond couple loving life in new Renaissance luxury retirement apartment
The couple, from Kennington, near Oxford, made the decision to move into a brand new luxury retirement apartment development in Abingdon while they were still in good health.
Tony, a retired Lieutenant Colonel with a bomb disposal unit in the army, and Wendy, a retired teacher, have settled in well. Now, a month after moving into their new home at Renaissance Retirement’s Fleur De Lis, the first purpose built development of independent living retirement properties in Abingdon for over two decades, the couple couldn’t be happier.
Wendy, 83, and Tony, 85, both wanted to continue living locally and to be near their family, but also wanted an apartment which had security and very low maintenance.
“We are delighted with our move. There are so many positives about living here,” said Wendy. She added: “It’s very relaxed, quiet and peaceful. We have also enjoyed the company of the other owners. We both joke that it’s a bit like being on holiday in a really lovely hotel!”
Fleur-de-Lis comprises 24 apartments, with added owner exclusive facilities, including a well-appointed and furnished Owners’ Lounge, landscaped gardens and a guest suite.
The luxurious apartments at Fleur de Lis feature high specification internal finishes, and many of the two bedroom apartments utilize clever sliding doors which allow owners to create flexible living spaces.
Wendy said: “My only stipulation was that the apartment had to be on the ground floor and with a window looking out from the kitchen. I overlook the beautiful courtyard gardens.”
The apartments are ideally suited to downsizers, and for those looking to maintain a quality standard of independent living throughout their later years. Owners have access to Abingdon’s cultural attractions, including the Abbey, the tranquil river side and the Abbey Meadow which boasts a heated outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts.
Security also played a big part in the couple’s decision to move. Tony added: “It’s nice to have people around us all the time on site. We feel very safe and that’s important at our age.”
Wendy said: “My daughter often visits us and I keep in touch with the family on my laptop. The staff have been so friendly and have really helped us settle in. Rachel is a great concierge and nothing seems to be too much trouble.”
