David is right at home in luxury retirement development

As moving homes go, the 400 yards that one Abingdon resident travelled might be one of the shortest in history.

David, 86, has moved into Renaissance Retirement’s luxury independent retirement development Fleur-de-Lis on Wootton Road. The well-known retired Abingdon businessman, who ran one of the town’s most popular department stores Beesley’s for many years, moved out of his bungalow and into a two bedroom luxury apartment and isn’t looking back.

Downsizing into a purpose-built development was a consideration after David lost his wife several years ago but it’s only been over the last six months that he seriously considered the move.

David said: “It’s been playing on my mind and with Fleur de Lis being so close I’d seen the development being built. I’d looked at some flats in town but they weren’t right and looked a bit tired. Keeping the garden was becoming a struggle and the time was right. I was sold after my first visit and on my second tour with my daughter I had the cheque book out to out down a deposit. I think the fact they are brand new was a big attraction – it’s very much yours then.

“My daughter wasn’t sure when I first told her about my planned move but quickly came around. She was equally impressed with all set up here at Fleur de Lis and knew I’d be happy.”

David added: “There’s a great companionship and a genuine bond between owners. I wasn’t looking for it but have welcomed it. All the owners look out for each other and we are like-minded people. We also have Rachel the Renaissance concierge who is amazing and always smiling. She does so much for us.”

Security was another important consideration for David’s move. “It’s very secure here and I like the idea of being able to lock up and leave and not worry about what might happen to my home.”

Finally, what’s best about Renaissance? David added: “Apart from Rachael the concierge and the community feeling here, the SmoothMove service was first class. Catherine and her team couldn’t have been more helpful. When friends asked how the move went I reply ‘I didn’t do anything – they did everything! I even went off to lunch at one point and left them to unpack for me. It was very stress free.”
