Abingdon downsizers find their perfect retirement home

Three months after downsizing from their family home into a luxury retirement apartment in Abingdon and it’s all smiles from John and Angie Young, who never looked back.

The couple had been exploring options in the Abingdon area and quickly made up their minds that Renaissance Retirement’s Fleur de Lis on Wootton Road was the ideal new home for them.

John said: “I made up my mind it was the place I wanted to live within an hour - we didn’t have to look anywhere else place. I knew we’d be happy here and we are. It has everything we need.”

Within a few months John, 69, and Angie, 67, had sold their house and moved into a brand new one bed apartment at Renaissance Retirement’s Fleur-de-Lis luxury retirement development.

Angie said: “We wanted to stay in the area, to be near family and friends and there aren’t many developments like this around. You won’t find anywhere better for independent retirement living in the area.”

Angie added: “The location here is excellent – just a few minutes into the town of Abingdon by foot. We’ve only been here a few months but there’s a lovely feeling of community with the other owners.

“We thought it would be too expensive to move into Fleur-de-Lis. In fact we were told this by someone. However, we were pleasantly surprised that we could afford it. It’s like moving into a 4 star hotel. It’s brand new and no up-keep!”

Still only in their 60s John and Angie are on the younger side for retirement living and they’ve had a few friends raised an eyebrow at their decision.

“Some of our friends were surprised when we told them what we were doing but our family were behind us.  But we think we are the perfect age to make this move. It’s a different, more relaxed way of living and right for us. We freed up some capital, which has enabled us to have a very relaxed way of living.

Downsizing to a modern, well serviced apartment was also of vital importance as the Youngs had grown tired of the costs of running a larger, older home. “It was the cleaning, the upkeep of the garden and then maintenance costs. So we thought ‘the time to move is now’ before we had to.”

Fleur-de-Lis, the first purpose built development of independent living retirement properties in Abingdon for over two decades, comprises 24 apartments, with added owner exclusive facilities, including a well-appointed and furnished Owners’ Lounge, landscaped gardens and a guest suite. The company has sold over 90 per cent of its apartments with the last few one bedroom apartments remaining.
